THE Terras will not be rushed into appointing a new manager despite having received a flurry of applications over the weekend.

Since Brendon King’s sacking last Thursday night, the club has been inundated with enquiries but, according to Nigel Biddlecombe, the vacant post is unlikely to be filled until after Christmas.

Speaking after Saturday’s goalless draw at Banbury, the Weymouth chairman told Echosport: “The applications we have received are into double figures and there have been a lot of enquiries too, but it is early days and we certainly aren’t in any hurry.

“Jason Matthews is happy to take it on for a few weeks and, at the moment, we are just going to enjoy the fact that we picked up a good point at Banbury at the weekend.”

Caretaker-boss Matthews went with a 4-5-1 formation on Saturday in a bid to make his team harder to beat and it certainly paid off.

Not only did his side keep their first clean sheet in the Calor Southern Premier Division in seven outings but they also created the better chances.

Matthews said: “It was a brilliant response from the lads and to be honest I thought we did enough to nick it.

“They certainly couldn’t have given me more and although we did not get the win, I was really chuffed afterwards.

“They came at us a bit on the break in the last five or 10 minutes but other than that I thought it was all us.

“We certainly had the better chances and I couldn’t fault anyone.

“I thought Luke Winsper was particularly outstanding and man of the match.

“He got through so much work and just never stopped running for us in the middle of the park.”

He continued: “We set out to be solid and it actually helped us bring our wingers into play more.

“I asked Mark Ford to do a job wide left and he had more touches there than he does up front, and Luke Burbidge on the other wing managed to get on the outside of his man a few times.

“Dave Allen also did a good job sitting in the middle of midfield and overall it was just a good all-round team performance.”

Matthews also handed the captain’s armband to Sam Poole. Explaining his decision, he went on to add: “I think Sam has done very well this season.

“He has really impressed me with his attitude and I just thought he deserved it.”

The Terras remain 16th in the Southern Premier Division table, 12 points off the play-offs.
