NEW chairman John Ryan believes Weymouth Cricket Club is on the up again.

Ryan has taken over at the helm following Hugh Lawes’ decision to stand down to concentrate on the ever-improving junior section, and he is looking forward to the challenge.

Speaking at the club’s AGM, he said: “Hugh has put in a great deal of time and effort into the youth section, which has already seen participation rise from just eight to a massive 40 plus.

“All at the club acknowledge the fantastic work that Hugh, Gerald Merchant and Matt Lawes carry out and to see a competitive youth section is brilliant for all con-cerned.

“The youth set up recently completed a successful indoor league campaign that saw them finish as champions, so many congratulations to all involved.”

There have also been changes to the senior set up with Kieron Womble taking over the first-team captaincy from Matt Lawes, and Pete Gordon inheriting the reins of the seconds.

Ryan added: “Kieron will be taking on the challenge that role provides and he anticipates a few changes in the first team set-up, with some of the more est-ablished players featuring in the second team, under the newly-appointed Pete Gordon.

“With a good mix of experience and youth, I am sure both sides will be very competitive.”

The Seasiders have struggled in recent years, particularly in terms of availability in regards to players, but Ryan is confident the situation will improve next season.

He said: “It is no secret that the club has had problems but, to be fair, many local clubs have and we feel we have turned a corner now.”

Ryan went on to thank several local businesses for their cont-inued support including JD Weth-erspoon, The Famous Old Spa, Snookes and The Lounge Bar.

He also thanked Tom England and David Trotter for all their hard work behind the scenes in respect of administration and finance.

New committee members were also welcomed in the form of Laurie Whyte and Ben Lawes, who will bring much welcomed input and fresh ideas.

There are a few projects currently ongoing surrounding coaching kit, a new score box, covers and practice facilities, all of which will aid the playing of cricket for all stakehold- ers.

Ryan’s wish is for the Seasiders to one day have their own home as the costs involved at present put a big strain on the club.

Weymouth currently play at Redlands where each game costs in the region of £250 to put on after pitch hire, umpires and matchball costs, and the pro-vision of refreshments etc.

Despite, this the club will be offering free Saturday League cricket to all under-19s next season. Anyone interested in playing for Weymouth can contact Ryan on 07506810064.
