JASON Matthews thought the character the Terras showed in Saturday’s comeback at Frome Town was “unbelievable”.

Weymouth looked on course for a second successive defeat in the Calor Southern Premier Division until two goals in eight minutes from Stewart Yetton flipped the game on its head in the closing stages.

Speaking after the 2-1 victory, Matthews told Echosport: “I was disappointed after the defeat against Poole on Boxing Day but for the boys to respond in that manner was just fantastic.

“When they give you everything like that it makes it all worthwhile, and it proves just what spirit there is in the dressing room.”

The Weymouth caretaker-manager continued: “The character the lads showed to come back in that way was just unbelievable.

“I thought it was going to be a one-goal game at one stage, so when they got the first I knew it was going to be tough to come back.

“However, the lads dug in and kept going, and in the end we got our rewards.”

The decision to bring on defender Nathan Walker as an emergency striker proved the turning point in the game.

Matthews went on to add: “Nathan put in a great shift when he came on and gave the Frome defence a lot of problems.

“He started winning headers for us up front and that allowed our strikers to gamble a bit more.

“Stewart Yetton then did what he does best by scoring with two fantastic finishes, before we then saw them game out really well in the last few minutes.

“The effort the lads put in for me was incredible and I was proud of each and every one of them.”

In more good news, it appears the recent dispute between the Walker brothers and the club’s board has finally been resolved.

The two players were put on the transfer list recently but have vowed to continue to give everything for their hometown club.

Matthews said: “I have known about the issue for a couple of weeks but I am led to believe it has now been sorted out.

“It was basically an administration error and the fact it has been addressed means we can all move on now.

“Michael and Nathan have both been training hard and although it has been frustrating for Nathan not to be in the starting XI lately, he has continued to be professional about it.

“I had no doubts about him coming on and doing the business for us on Saturday, and I think the whole performance showed just how much we are digging in for each other now, which is a very encouraging sign.”

Since Matthews was handed temporary charge, the Terras have picked up seven points from four games, making him one of the leading contenders to take the job permanently.

The board of directors have clearly been impressed with his short spell at the helm but, according to club chairman Nigel Biddlecombe, the situation surrounding the vacant post is still being discussed.
