WEYRAD AC

WEYRAD Angling Club is a small and friendly club that fishes monthly Chesil-based matches with Weymouth Angling Centre tackle vouchers on offer to the winners and runners-up.

Competitions are specimen-based on a weigh and return basis for fish not required for the table.

The original club was set up as a works angling club way back in the early 1980s and membership was originally restricted to company employees.

However, membership was opened up in the late 80s and the club’s success has continued despite the company, Weyrad Electronics, closing in 2000.

Only being a small club has undoubtedly contributed to its ongoing success. It’s really a regular gathering of friends who enjoy fishing together with the added bonus of the chance to win a tackle voucher just to add a competitive edge.

All money generated through memberships and match subs is given back by way of monthly and end-of-year prizes.

The 2013 season drew to a close with the most successful members receiving their awards at the AGM and presentation evening held at Victoria Inn in Chickerell.

John Burt was the new shore match champion with Kevin Turner second and Terry Dell third.

The club always welcomes any new members and anyone interested in joining should call Kevin on 783001 or contact him by email at kevin@aquariumtechnology. co.uk

A FAMILY AFFAIR

MEMBERS of Weymouth AS fished the second match of their new season as a rover – most anglers this time of year would opt to fish Chesil Beach but once again high winds forced them to think twice.

In the hope of slightly better conditions, most of the competitors chose to try their luck fishing from Swanage Pier and the Stone Pier in Weymouth.

The winner on the day was Trad Casey with his bag of dogfish, pollack and pout, second was Ray Barnes with dogfish, rockling and pout, and third was junior member Ethan Casey with his catch of dogfish and pout.

Ethan was top junior and also had the heaviest fish for his dogfish of 0.51kg. The pool payout for heaviest fish went to senior member Ray Barnes for his 0.46kg dogfish.

Best specimen went to the third member of the Casey family, Ryan, for his pout of 57.35 per cent.

SAMALITE LEAGUE

THIRTY-SIX competitors entered the latest Samalite League match, a good turnout considering the event was moved from Chesil to Preston Beach due to the gale force winds.

A variety of species were brought to the scales including flounder, bass, dogfish, pout, whiting, five-bearded rockling and a surprise plaice for Darren Stevens.

Fished over two zones the results were as follows:

Zone A – 1 Russell Preston (dogfish, 0.91kg), 2 Gary Loveless (dogfish, 0.77kg), 3 Ollie Hopkins (three rockling, 0.30kg), 4 Darren Stevens (plaice, 0.23kg).

Zone B – 1 Rob Marshall (pout and bass, 2.3kg), 2 Danny Woodcock (dogfish, 0.77kg), 3 Andy Hutchings (dogfish, 0.69kg), 4 Dave Lovelock (flounder, 0.42kg).

Rob Marshall had the heaviest fish of the match with his bass weighing 2.2kg.

Penn points were awarded as follows; Rob Marshall 3pts, Russell Preston 2, Gary Loveless and Danny Woodcock 1.

The weigh-in and 2013 presentation took place at Weymouth AS – the hotdogs served were the best bite of the night for some!

Anyone wishing to fish the next match at Cogden Beach on March 2 (1pm-6pm) should call Dave Lane on 07977132951 or Ant Buik on 07729830478.
