JASON Matthews has boosted his defensive options with another loan signing from Torquay United.

First-year pro Jake Hutchings, who can play at centre-back or right-back, has joined on a one-month deal after a recent spell with Grays Athletic.

The 18-year-old becomes the second Gull to join Weymouth this year, following the acquisition of winger Niall Thompson, whose current loan stay is due to expire on Saturday.

Matthews told Echosport: “Jake has recently been on loan at Grays and is a young player with a lot of potential. Torquay think very highly of him and I am delighted to have him on board.

“With Michael Walker and Jake Green both set to serve suspensions, we needed to bring someone in, and he will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to Bedford.”

The Terras were scheduled to travel to Truro City last night but the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Weymouth have now had three games in a row put on the back burner due to the recent wet weather but Matthews is not too concerned.

He added: “These postponements have given some of the injured lads more days to recover and a couple of them are not far away.

“Ben Joyce and Mark Ford are both making good progress while Ashley Wells was due to see someone yesterday about his injured groin.”
