WEYMOUTH arrested an alarming six-game winless streak in the Calor Southern Premier Division with a comfortable 2-0 home defeat of struggling Bashley on Saturday.

Afterwards, a clearly satisfied player-boss Jason Matthews was pleased with both the result against plucky opponents and how his two new loan signings from Plymouth Argyle bedded in on their debuts.

Centre-back Jamie Richards started the game and, in an impressive first outing, netted a fine header to open the scoring while Vassell entered the fray as a late substitute.

“I’m pleased with the result because we didn’t start well and gave them a leg up as we just didn’t press the ball,” said Matthews.

At half-time, we said that the full-backs needed to become outlets and then we came into it in the second half.

“They were hard to break down though as they put bodies behind the ball, but we dug in, kept a clean sheet and came away with a 2-0 win.”

On his loan signings, he added: “Jamie Richards did very well and it’s clear we have to go down the youth route at the moment.

“Jake Hutchings is desperate to stay until the end of the season and, as I try to stamp my authority on Weymouth, I’ve got a few experienced players I’m looking to bring in pre-season. For now we move on to tomorrow and Bashley again.”
