BAR 314 go into their clash with Lazy Lizard this weekend in the knowledge that victory will effectively give them the Weymouth Sunday League title with four games to spare.

Phil Groves’ men scored three times in the final 15 minutes to beat Famous Old Spa 3-2 last time out, leaving them on the brink of successfully defending their league crown.

They currently have a 15-point advantage over second-placed Aura, who now require a mathematical miracle to wrest the silverware from Bar 314’s clutches.

Aura could still claim the title if Bar 314 pick up three points at the Lizard on Sunday, but they would have to win all their remaining games, hope their rivals lose all of theirs, and overturn a massive goal difference.

Bar 314 had been in real danger of losing for only the second time in the league this season when they trailed 2-0 at home to Famous Old Spa.

The Spa took a 1-0 lead into half-time and doubled their advantage from the penalty spot in the second period.

But after a change of formation and the introduction of Marco Nott, the hosts rallied in the closing stages with goals from Chris Skinner and Carl McClements hauling them level.

And, with only a minute left, Skinner struck again to the delight of his team-mates and manager.

“It was a really good game,” said Groves. “We always seem to struggle every time we play them.

“It was one of our toughest matches of the year and it looked like it was going to be a bad day at the office. But we changed things around with about 15 minutes to go and went on to win it.”

Aura did all they could to put pressure on the leaders with a 5-3 triumph against Britannia.

Rory Zima (2), Harry Norman, Oscar Preece and Chucky Taylor got Aura’s goals, while Stu Burley, Chris Squibb and Robert Squibb replied.

Sailors Return bounced back from a disappointing loss to Broadmayne with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Moby Dick’s.

Liam Puckett finished well from Gary Brindley’s through ball to break the deadlock, and the former made it 2-0 when found by Brendan Black.

Resolute defending kept Moby Dick’s at bay and the game was put to bed when Daniel Andrews powered in a header from Black’s pinpoint corner.

Elsewhere, Broadmayne thrashed Market House 5-1, Dolphin overcame Alexandra 3-2 and Lazy Lizard beat Bakers Arms 4-1.
