WEYMOUTH Martial Arts Centre’s Darren Anstey is the new BIKMA British A-class heavyweight Thai boxing champion.

He stopped experienced Combat Academy campaigner Arvyvas Junkas two minutes into the first round of their contest following a devastating elbow strike which left the London fighter needing stitches and unable to carry on.

The fight took place in front of 600 people on the Warrior Fight Night show at Bournemouth’s Carrington Hotel.

Club coach Tom Ashe said: “It has been an amazing 12 months for Darren as he has won five titles, including English, British and European, in all kickboxing disciplines – Thai, total full contact and K1 rules.

“He has won them all by knockout as well.

“The next step for Anstey will be to try and emulate fellow club-mate Jo Edwards and challenge for the TFC world title sometime this year, and hopefully become Portland’s first world kickboxing champion.”

Weymouth Martial Arts Centre has been running for more than 20 years and is producing champions in all disciplines.

New beginners classes in Thai boxing and mixed martial arts for adults and juniors are about to start.
