SWANAGE & WAREHAM LADIES 8

WEYMOUTH LADIES 0

WEYMOUTH were soundly beaten by East Division leaders Swanage & Wareham.

The visitors started at a fast pace and were strong in the tackle, while the Swanage keeper needed to be on top form to halt any attacks.

Creative play from Wendy Butcher in the midfield and strong defence from Anneka Rogers and Berni John saw Weymouth firmly on the front foot.

However, within the blink of an eye Swanage were 3-0 ahead, leaving Weymouth stunned as the sides went into half-time.

Weymouth felt hard done by after such a promising first period, but they conceded another goal early in the second half, which saw their heads drop even further.

Two more followed and some umpiring decisions went against Weymouth, frustrating them even more and leading to several mistakes.

Another two goals before the end rubbed more salt into the wound, leaving Weymouth to regroup for today’s season-ending game at home to bottom side Yeovil and Sherborne Seconds.

Weymouth: Austin, Rogers, John, Culbreth, Byrne, Butcher, Sauven, Blundell, Van Crugten, Carter Miles, Bustin.

WEYMOUTH LADIES II 5 POOLE LADIES 3

WEYMOUTH claimed a hard-fought victory over Poole to secure third place in Channel Division Two.

Lynda Drewitt opened the scoring for the hosts, marking a fantastic return from injury by beating the Poole goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

The visitors responded in kind, breaking through the Weymouth defence to level the scores.

The pace picked up as both sides looked to take the lead, with Weymouth midfielders Annabel Canaven, Gina Huntley and Lily Young providing chances for Claire Thomasson and Drewitt.

From one such move, the ball found its way to Drewitt and she made no mistake to score her second of the day.

Poole hit back again and, picking up on a mistake by the hosts, they drew level before scoring another in quick succession.

The home side regrouped and goalkeeper Anna Neish made a couple of top saves to keep her side in the game.

Gill Ogg, Jo Ray, Alex Hearn and Dervla Ireland kept the visitors at bay, however, a mistimed tackle from Ray led to a warning and a green card.

Skipper Liefy Hendrikz and Anna Dencher kept the tempo going with more attacks on goal, and, in the end, it was Dencher and Drewitt, taking her tally to four, who clinched the win for Weymouth.

Weymouth will look to end the season on a high when they travel to Yeovil and Sherborne IV today.
