BOTH of Weymouth Hockey Club’s Under-10s teams have qualified for the regional round of the In2Hockey County Championships.

The boys’ and girls’ sides played with real confidence and tasted victory in two of their three games, beating both Gillingham and Wimborne 1-0, and losing to 4-0 Bournemouth.

This put the teams in second place in their group, meaning they qualify for the next regional round at Millfield School on April 27.

For the girls, Amelia Jones, Erin Horn and Erin Phillips were solid in defence and Lily Amor provided the drive in the centre of the midfield.

Katy Stone and Isabella Hopps managed to get their names on the scoresheet during the day and Hannah Venner provided a potent threat up front.

The boys possessed a strikeforce of Jules Holloway and Mark Cheesman, who provided the goals to book their place in the next stage.

In the Under-12 boys’ tournament, Weymouth got the better of Wimborne once more and captured a hard-fought draw against Gillingham.

But they also suffered defeats to Blandford and Bournemouth to leave them fourth in their group on goal difference.

The club’s Under-12 girls were also edged out by a solitary goal in all three of their encounters, but were competitive throughout and played some good hockey against tough opponents.

The juniors at Weymouth Hockey Club carry on training through the summer term on Sunday mornings at 9.30am.

New members are always more than welcome and training resumes on Sunday, May 11.
