SHUTTLEBUSTERS Youth Badminton Club held their annual tournament at Redlands Community Sports Hub.

The competition was handicapped and the 22 entrants were split into three age groups – boys’ under-14s, boys’ over-14s and girls.

In the first of those sections, number one seed Nathan Stroud played aggressively and tactically to secure a total of 129 points, just one more than runner-up James Mathie.

The six over-14 boys also played to their full potential and it was second seed Charlie Squibb who came out on top with 75 points after some punishing rallies.

Simon Rose was steady and focused, and he executed some precise shots to take second place with 70 points.

All six of the girls who participated showed plenty of enthusiasm and first place went to Emma Osborne.

She accrued 72 points, one more than number two seed Georgie Kelly, who delivered her shots with grit and determination.

Trophies and Direct Sports vouchers were presented to the winners and runners-up.

Coach Liz Osborne said: “All players were dedicated and committed.

“I witnessed great badminton and it was exciting watching all the players fight for each and every point.

“They were focused and gave 100 per cent, and I am very proud of them all.”

Shuttlebusters was started by Osborne, a qualified badminton coach, in February 2006 to encourage youngsters to play the sport.

Children from the age of 10 play every Tuesday evening at Redlands and on Saturday mornings at the Weymouth College Sports Centre.

In-club tournaments, competitions and matches against other junior clubs are held regularly, and since the club started many players have trained and played with the county team.
