DORCHESTER 18 FROME 25

DORCHESTER are resigned to finishing the season last but one in Southern Counties South after only picking up a meagre losing bonus point against Frome.

The home side started quickly and took an early lead courtesy of a penalty from the boot of Jamie Morgan.

A well-read interception by Matt Smith brought Dorchester the first try of the game, the home player running almost the length of the pitch to score. Morgan converted to make it 10-0.

Frome closed the gap to 10-6 with two penalties, but Dorchester responded with one of their own after captain James Newsam was held up over the line.

Half-time arrived with the home pack completely dominant and the hosts in command at 13-6 up with 40 minutes left.

However, Frome crucially scored first in the second half with a converted try that brought them level.

Then, 10 minutes from the end, Frome took advantage of what appeared to be a clear knock-on, touching down to take the lead for the first time in the match – this was quickly followed by another as Dorchester chased the game.

The home side dug deep and pressed the visitors’ line, with successive scrums resulting in two yellow cards for Frome in quick succession.

Pushing for a try to secure a losing bonus point, the last play of the game saw Dave Clarke score in the corner.

Dorchester’s last game of the season is away to Ivel Barbarians a week on Saturday.
