ASHLEY Wells has become the latest Terras’ player to be ruled out for the remainder of the season after pulling up with a hamstring injury near the end of his side’s draw against Hitchin last Saturday.
The news comes as it was confirmed by doctors that Luke Winsper has broken a bone in his foot and will also not feature again for Weymouth this term.
Player-manager Jason Matthews had already been planning to go into the final seven fixtures of the campaign without Winsper after an initial assessment following the injury sustained in the victory at Bashley.
Wells and Winsper join Ben Joyce and long-term absentees Simon Evans and Kyle Critchell on the sidelines in what has been a difficult season for the club with regards to injuries.
But while Matthews is understandably disappointed to lose two of his players for the run-in, he sees it as a chance for other players to get some Southern League experience under the belts.
“We knew Luke’s injury was pretty serious because it took 10 days for the swelling to go down,” he said. “He has broken his third metatarsal, but we were expecting him to be out for the season anyway.
“We’ll do our utmost to help him get fit for the start of pre-season, and we’ve offered him a new contract which he should be signing in the next couple of weeks.
“Ash did his hamstring on Saturday and it looks like we will be without him for the rest of the season.
“I’ll have to make a change to the team for the first time in four games on Saturday, although these injuries give someone else a chance.”
Matthews may also have to make a change up front against Hungerford on the weekend, with captain Stewart Yetton nursing a nasty knock to his ankle.
Mark Ford could be in contention to start if Yetton can’t take to the field, though Matthews is mindful that the former has only just returned from a spell out.
“Yetts is a doubt after going over on his ankle pretty badly on Saturday,” added Matthews. “But we’ve got a few options now which is good.
“Fordy may be in contention but it might be a bit too soon for him.”
