RUGBY: Dorchester fall again as sorry season finishes

Dorset Echo: WELL-EARNED SCORE: Dave Gower WELL-EARNED SCORE: Dave Gower

IVEL BARBARIANS 27 DORCHESTER 10

DORCHESTER’S disappointing season ended with a whimper as they crashed to defeat against a fired up Ivel Barbarians

Playing with the breeze in the first period, Dorchester needed to get off to a good start and they did begin brightly, but the urgency soon dropped and the home side began to boss proceedings.

Two converted tries in two minutes put Ivel, bottom of Southern Counties South, firmly in control.

Dorchester did rouse themselves near the end of the half and, following a sustained attack, Dave Gower dived over for a well-earned score.

Jamie Morgan was unable to convert but there were hopeful signs of a comeback.

As the second half began, Dorchester built on the try, with the Ivel fly-half using the wind to good effect and keeping the visitors pinned in their own half.

An easy penalty extended Ivel’s lead before an opportunist try sealed the home side’s victory.

Dorchester were not quite finished though, skipper James New-sam barrelling over for a consolation try which went unconverted.

Fittingly, the final kick of the game was a successful penalty by the Ivel outside-half.

Just two league wins represents a hugely unsatisfactory campaign for the county town side and one they won’t want to repeat next season.

Dorchester: Evans, Pengelly, Cottell, Makepeace, Broadbent, S Jones, Newsam, Mitchell, D Gower, Bament, Paton, Harvey, Deakin, Morgan, Clark. Reps used: Dixon, E Grassby, M Fry.
