GOAL-SHY Dorchester Town left their shooting boots at home again on Saturday, but boss Phil Simkin is confident that drawing blanks will be less of a problem for his team next season.

The Magpies’ 3-0 reverse at Whitehawk saw them fail to score in a Skrill South game for the 18th time this term – they have netted once in their last five league outings.

However, Simkin has already been busy setting up potential new signings for the 2014/15 campaign, with strikers his top priority.

He of course won’t have any fresh faces on board for today’s visit of Gosport Borough to the Avenue (3pm), but he is still eager for the Magpies to put a smile on the faces of their supporters in the final home fixture of the season.

As for Saturday, a lack of goals again proved to be Dorchester’s Achilles heel, and it is a problem that needs to be addressed, according to Simkin.

“The score flattered White-hawk because we actually played quite well,” he said. “But there was no end product.

“It’s obvious what I need to do to make us competitive and I’ve been working on signing new front players for the last three weeks. Any money that’s available will be going there.

“Things are looking promising and I’ve spoken to several players already. I believe that if I can do some business we will be very competitive next season.”

Jake Smeeton missed the Whitehawk defeat to attend the birth of his second child but he will be back for today’s game against FA Trophy runners-up Gosport.

And with it being Dorchester’s last match on home turf before the summer, Simkin wants to send the fans away on a positive note.

“It hasn’t been easy recently,” he added. “We haven’t played badly but we need to score goals.

“We’ll be trying to put on a show for the fans and we’ve got the awards presentation after the game as well.

“It has been a long season, longer than any I have known, and the sooner the curtain comes down the better.

“We’ll go away and recharge the batteries when it has finished. The players can have a rest and then we’ll start working towards next season.”
