AN exciting England Netball opportunity has arrived on the courts of Weymouth, with the launch of the Back to Netball initiative.

The scheme’s aim is to give women aged 16 or over a taste of the game, whether they have not played since school and are rediscovering their sporting abilities, or and learning a completely new sport.

The sessions cover all of the basics from passing to pivoting, as well as revising the playing positions and the fundamental rules of the game.

Since the initiative was set up in 2010, more than 40,000 women nationwide have taken part so far.

The programme, which won Best Sports Project at the 2012 National Lottery Awards, is already successfully running locally in Dorchester and Blandford and level two coaches Alison Holmes and Juliette Frampton of the South and West Dorset League felt it was the time for the scheme to come to Weymouth.

With support from the league’s senior development officer Laura Gardner, the programme is now going to be running weekly for the women of the seaside town and surrounding area.

Gardner said: “It’s an exciting project to get more women involved in the biggest female sport in the country.

"Whether they want to play recreationally, socially or with a view to playing competitively in the future, the benefits of taking part are massive. Whether people want to become more active, improve their health, or just have fun.”

There are still places available on the programme and weekly sessions will run from 7pm until 8pm at Budmouth Community Sports Centre, starting tomorrow, each session will cost £3.
