TERRAS: Chairman backs Matthews as club continue to rebuild
CLUB chairman Nigel Biddlecombe reflected on a rollercoaster of a season for Weymouth Football Club, as they embark on their final game of the campaign at Chesham United this afternoon (3pm).
A win could see the Terras finish in the top 10 of the Southern Premier League, and would cap a year that the chairman admits has been up and down, but fully backs the ethos that Jason Matthews has implemented within the squad since his managerial appointment.
He told Echosport: “I think this season started with great promise but unfortunately there was the dip in mid-season which led to a change in manager.
“Jason has come in and made a number of changes and I’m sure he will admit some have worked and some haven’t.
“At the end of the day, the club are solvent, we aren’t involved with relegation, we will finish comfortably in mid-table and another season has given us a further chance to rebuild and continue putting things together.
“We have great supporters and volunteers who work around the club, we are very fortunate and I wish to thank all of them for all the work they put in. At the same time those people deserve a product that we have to produce on the pitch.”
Looking forward to next year’s campaign, he added: “I believe that the vast majority of our supporters would accept a defeat as long as the football was entertaining and the effort was there, and that’s one thing that Jason will not let go next year.
“That’s the best thing about Jason, people will not go through the motions at Weymouth Football Club with him in charge and that has to be good for us moving forward.
“Jason will get his team playing the sort of football that the people of Weymouth want to see, it will be attractive and with a fully committed group of players.
“We always want to entertain and if we can tighten up at the same time and get some of the younger players to make their mark, then we will be doing the best we can for everybody.”
