A SATURDAY Sports Club in Weymouth has launched its 27th year with a full programme of games coaching for youngsters between five and 13.

The club, which starts on Saturday, May 10 (1-4pm), lasts for eight weeks until June 28 and will include athletics, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, mini-rugby, roun-ders and mini-tennis at Conifers Primary School.

Aimed at boys and girls of all abilities, those attending will be under the careful supervision of experienced teachers and coaches.

These include Bob Brittain, Andy Harris (FA football coach), Sean Fitzgerald (cricket coach), and Des Quick and Ryan Bissett from Weymouth rugby and tennis clubs.

Sports Club organiser Don Whistance began the event in 1987 because he found there were fewer organised sport and leisure activities for school children.

He said: “We introduce the children to a variety of sports, some of which they may not have experienced before, which will encourage them to develop as a more complete sportsperson.

“Every child will receive a certificate and medal at the end of the course and have the opportunity of winning one of the merit trophies linked to the sporting activities during the eight weeks.”
