WEYMOUTH St Paul’s Harriers athletes achieved some encouraging results in one of the first fixtures of the season, the Bournemouth Open.

Jules Holloway demonstrated why he was named the club’s under-11 male athlete of the year by picking up silver in the quad kids event.

The youngster gained 225 points from his four disciplines, achieving 12.0secs in the 75m sprint, 3.38m in the long jump, 2.05mins in the 600m and a huge throw of 31.79m in the howler.

In the under-13 boys’ section, Ryan Purse won gold in the 1,500m with a new personal best of 5.16mins, while Ben Jones won bronze in both the 200m (28.9secs) and javelin (26.48m), and was fourth in the 100m (14.7secs), all in lifetime bests.

Kai Groves ran a new best time of 30.4secs in the 200m to come third in his heat.

He was also fifth in the 800m in 2.44min and jumped a pers-onal best of 3.79m in the long jump.

James Tufnail impressed in the under-15 boys’ category, winning 300m gold in 40.6secs.

There was also gold for Nial Turner in the 800m, his time of 2.27.6mins beating his own previous best, while older brother Aiden, in his first under-17 race, achieved a very respectable 10.34mins to take the silver medal in the 3,000m.

Caila Kirkpatrick made a positive start to the season, winning silver in the shot putt with a pb of 7.01m and picking up fourth places in both the 100m (14.4secs) and 200m (29.9secs).

Amber Poullion came sixth in the shot putt (5.16m) in her first competition as an under-13.

Holly Anderson, making her debut at under-15 level, was fifth in the 800m (2.54mins) and achieved a pb of 3.85m in the long jump.

Hannah Westhenry, now campaigning at under-17 level, won bronze in the hammer (32.78m) and 300m (47.4secs), both in personal bests. She also came seventh in the javelin (16.39m).
