THE juniors’ Winter League at Weymouth Angling Society was rounded off with a presentation night which brought together young anglers, their families and friends.

The evening started with a short safety talk from the RNLI which held the children’s interest, especially the film about the effects of cold water shock.

Weymouth AS chairman Billy Short presented the awards and prizes to the winners down to 10th place, but no-one left empty-handed as even those who did not win went home with a goody bag.

Only 15 points separated the top three anglers at the end of the season, with the winner being decided in a closely-fought final match.

Ethan Casey took first place with 165 points, Jack Homer was runner-up on 159, and Nina Frapple was third with 150.

Fourth to 10th places were as follows; Aaliyah Frapple (135), Archie Gough (123), Rachel Dixon (105), Jane Burgess and Kieran McNulty (77), Mille Gray and Thomas Hussey (74), Jacob Hussey (68), Archie Marsland (63).

Reece Baker, Callum Coleman, Rhiannon Coleman, Emily Hus-sey, Sapphire Convey, Jasmine Smart, Sam Warren, Mason Stebbing and Taurie Stebbing all took home goody bags.

Casey was also presented with a gold medal from the Angling Trust for his thick lip mullet of 4lb 10oz, while Gough won the award for the best specimen of the year for his ballen wrasse of 2lb 9oz.

Short thanked Andy Selby of Weymouth Angling Centre for his continued sponsorship of the junior leagues, helpers Mick Chan-non and Mike Hussey, Sharon and Carol for the sausage rolls and buffet respectively, the parents and especially the children.

The Summer League starts on May 12 on the Stone Pier and is open to members only, while a new team league is to replace the schools league and will start in June.

WEYMOUTH AS
ONLY seven members signed on to fish the society’s latest shore match last Saturday, hardly surprising considering the conditions.

Fished as a Portland Rover from 3pm-9pm in very wet and windy weather, most anglers chose to fish in the shelter of Portland Harbour around Castletown Pier and Portland Castle.

Six of those hardy anglers brought fish to the scales at the end of the evening, with Ray Barnes winning the match, courtesy of three specimens weighing 1.23kg for 30 points.

Barnes also took the heaviest fish pool with his 0.49kg of ballen wrasse.

Junior angler Ethan Casey was level with Barnes on 1.23kg and 30 points but could only take top junior.

Gerald Barnes was second with three fish for 0.78kg and 25 points, third went to Phil Cheeseman with 0.12kg and 21 points. Jack Homer, another junior, weighed in 0.27kg for 23 points.

Cheeseman had best specimen pool with his corkwing wrasse of 26.49 per cent of specimen weight.
