TERRAS’ talisman Stewart Yetton has agreed a new two-year deal with the club keeping him with Weymouth until the summer of 2016.

The prolific striker, who joined from Truro City last summer, has put to bed rumours of a return to his former club and declared that Weymouth was always the team for him in the long term.

The front man told Echosport: “I’m absolutely delighted, I’ve been speaking to Jason about it over the last couple of weeks and I totally believe in what he is doing and where the club wants to go.

“I think the fact that Jason made me captain for the back end of the season has played a massive part in it, he wants me to continue being captain and the club that has been so good to me.

“If it wasn’t for the travelling I would have signed at any time but we ironed a few things out and when it boiled down to it, I always wanted to stay.

On the ongoing speculation, the striker added: “There was obviously some interest from Truro which I’m sure many people knew about and it’s tough to decide not to go back, but it was certainly important to carry on with Weymouth after this year with the opportunity that Jase has given me.”

Yetton has accumulated more than 25 goals in all competitions this term and Weymouth player-manager Jason Matthews expressed his delight about the capture of his man.

He added: “I’m going to look to build my team around Stewart, this gets the ball rolling and it’s great to have him on board.

“Truro made their interests clear along with another couple of clubs but Stewart really enjoys it at Weymouth and we are delighted to have him.

“I would have been devastated to have lost him, in football nothing is certain but I’m delighted that he has secured his two-year contract.

“It’s interesting times for the club and I’m closing in on my targets by the day, nothing is concrete yet but there should be a fair bit of movement fairly soon.”
