PORTLAND RED TRIANGLE 160 (19pts) beat DORCHESTER SECONDS 67 (5pts) by 93 runs

PORTLAND Red Triangle began their season with a comprehensive 93-run victory over rivals Dorchester Seconds.

Asked to bat first, the visitors made slow progress against the accurate Dorchester seamers and were indebted to a fine knock of 75 from all-rounder Simon Proffitt to post a competitive total of 160 as the home side swung the ball and made use of the damp wicket.

When Dorchester batted they were almost immediately under pressure with spinner Scott Males taking the first four wickets in his seven-over spell.

Other batsmen came and went fairly rapidly and it was only a spirited 27 not out from Dorch-ester’s Tom Blair down the order that boosted the hosts’ score to 67 all out.

New Portland captain Males said: ¨It was great to start the season with a win, especially as we certainly had the more challenging batting conditions.

This really emphasised the value of Simon’s 75, which was certainly a match-winning inn-ings.

“The bowling was generally good and the fielding excellent, notably the catches from Matt Barrett and Ryan Price. We now look forward to this week when we are at home against the 2013 league winners Cerne Valley.¨
