BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Go Spike set for smashing start on Weymouth Sands

THE Weymouth Go Spike League starts up next Tuesday evening on Weymouth Beach.

Each week, from now until August, there are competitions for all standards from complete beginners to experts.

The players can choose each week at what level they compete.

The two-a-side A event is for experienced players who are looking for strong competition.

This event always produces exciting volleyball to watch and, at the end of the season, the player with the most points will be awarded the coveted King Of The Beach award.

Current holder Ryan Stout, pictured, will be keen to defend his title but will face stiff competition from players such as Terry Oldrid, Ali Mitchell, Dave James and Jules Stout, among others.

The two-a-side B Series is for players who have some experience of volleyball and want to go on in the future to compete in the A Series.

Many of Weymouth’s top players started playing in this section before graduating to the A Series.

The third section is being re-introduced this season and is a four-a-side competition for beginners or inexperienced beach volleyballers.

It is hoped this will attract some of the players who compete in the always popular Battens Charity Evening in August or who play in Division Two of the Weymouth Indoor league.

Each team can have a squad of up to six players per night.

One of the reasons these event seems so popular is that teams do not need to commit to the whole summer but can just enter on the evening for that particular week.

The entry fee each week for the two-a-sides is £8 per team and for the four-a-side is £10.

To register, teams need to meet on the beach at the permanent courts next to the Boat Cafe between 6pm and 6.30pm.
