BAR 314 1 DOLPHIN 2

DOLPHIN upset the odds to claim the Len Mahoney Cup with a 2-1 win over Bar 314 on an emotional day at Grove Corner.

With the tragic passing of Len Mahoney over the weekend, the game in his honour was settled thanks to a first-half brace from Charlie May.

Myatt netted in response for league champions Bar 314 but May’s double ensured it was Dolphin who emerged victorious.

Dolphin player-manager Dan Spence told Echosport: “It was a good game and it was tough just like we expected, but every single one of our players was at the top of their game and we matched them in every department.

“In the last 10 minutes when they were pushing for the goal to get level, I thought we defended superbly.”

Speaking about the man the cup is named after, he added: “Apparently he wanted to be there to present the trophies and it’s sad that he wasn’t.

“It has been the Len Mahoney Cup for a while and to win it in his honour is very special.”

Elsewhere on finals day, the Bakers Arms and Broadmayne, right, needed spot-kicks to decide the George Eley Cup after the match ended 3-3.

Broadmayne eventually came out on top, winning 5-4 on penalties.

Simon Shapcott found the net twice in open play for the Bakers along with Chris Towndrow.

Broadmayne’s goals came from Will Turland, with two, and a strike from Kerrin Hutchins.

In the opening clash of the afternoon, Britannia claimed the Les Hallett Cup from Famous Old Spa with a thrilling 4-3 win.

Substitutes Dan Sidwell and Aaron Sharp came off the bench to score for the Spa, as well as Dean Taylor.

But they couldn’t do enough to stop Britannia, who won the clash thanks to a double strike from Jordy Bowler, one for Robert Squibb and a goal for replacement Karl Egdon.
