DAN Belt is looking for his Dorchester charges to be “selfish” with the bat when they meet Wimborne & Colehill Seconds tomorrow (1pm).

While skipper Belt was delighted with the county town’s side’s performance at Shroton on match day one, he felt some batsmen gave their wickets away too easily and could have been more ruthless at the crease.

And that is an area where he is hoping for improvement tomorrow, as his troops face a side that were bowled out for just 61 last Saturday during a heavy defeat to Bere Regis.

“There are always things we can improve and we could have got more runs against Shroton,” he said.

“People need to be more selfish and hit some big runs when the opportunities are there.

“Other than that we need to go to Wimborne with the same mindset we’ve had, and if we bat well we’ve got a strong enough bowling attack to stop them.

“Their ground is only a couple of years old and it’s a really nice wicket there which will hopefully suit us.

“It was a shame our game against Blandford was called off but we’re looking forward to this weekend and we’ll try and do what we did at Shroton.”

Unfortunately, Will Caldwell and Joe Power won’t be available for Dorchester, one of three teams setting the early season pace in Dorset Premier League Two.

Belt’s men were left frustrated last Saturday as rain forced the cancellation of their first home fixture of the season.

But with a much better weather forecast for this weekend, Dor-chester should have every chance of adding to their opening-day triumph at Shroton with another big points haul.

Commenting further on who might be Dorchester’s main rivals this summer, he added: “I think Bere Regis and Sherborne will do well this season and Martinstown have got some good players.

“But it’s very early days still and it’s difficult to say who will be in contention at the end.”

Elsewhere, Dorchester Seconds, victims of the weather as well last weekend, face a tough home clash with Cattistock in Division Two.
