IT has been a busy start for the youth section at Weymouth as the season has got under way.

The under-15s led by Gerald Marchant have had an excellent start to the campaign winning all but one game so far and more recently qualifying for the final of the West Dorset Cup.

The side has seen strong all-round performances from Dom Webb, Tom Chedzoy, Joe James, Ben Dring.

A regular number of these players are now appearing for the seniors’ second team and Webb has even turned out for the Seasiders’ first XI this term.

The under-13s have yet to play a game but an influx of new players from Wey Valley School has given manager Mark Lovett plenty to choose from in an exciting season that lies ahead.

Most of the new players have been put through their paces in the nets by coach Matt Lawes, so big things are expected from them.

The under-11s, managed jointly by Pete Gordon and Andy Ander-son, have seen numbers increase massively and this may even require a second team to be formed.

The one game played so far resulted in a loss to Martinstown but Weymouth put up a spirited fight with good batting from Tom Anderson and Charlie Muss-enden and excellent bowling from Billy Baker, Charlie Farwell and George Tonge.

In the under-9s, managed by Sai Maganti, the regular games have been great to watch with everyone enjoying themselves.

Senior coach Hugh Lawes has been very pleased with the up-take from the younger members and is confident that the future of the club is now in secure hands.

This season, the youth section welcomes sponsorship from Buildrite and new playing kit will be presented to the players soon.

* The youth section holds training sessions every Wednesday between 5.30-7pm at Wey Valley School and the numbers of children attending, both boys and girls, has been very encouraging.
