STALBRIDGE v WEYMOUTH

KIERON Womble believes that Weymouth’s trip to Stalbridge tomorrow could be a vital fixture in the grand scheme of things as their Premier One campaign continues.

Much like the rest of the division last weekend, Womble’s men suffered a washout in their scheduled fixture with Poole, but the skipper believes his side will keep their focus and fight all the way to deliver a victory.

Hosts Stalbridge are yet to win a game this season but only sit five points below the Seasiders, who currently occupy sixth place in the table.

Womble said: “We always have tough games up there and I imagine this time will be no different.

“There are a lot of teams down there fighting and I imagine Stalbridge will be as well. We are very similar in standard and it will be a very tough game.”

With another away trip in store tomorrow, the Seasiders’ first XI have been starved of cricket on their own patch at Redlands so far this term and are yet to play a game there due to the weather.

The captain, however, fails to let that be an excuse.

“Everyone wants to get out there at Redlands but the great British weather keeps stopping us,” Womble added.

“You want to make your home ground your fortress and other teams have an advantage when they are at home against us. We keep having to play away but we will take it as it comes – if we can’t play at home, we can’t play.”

Paul Payne is a fitness doubt for Weymouth with a back problem, while Andy Jones keeps his place after being selected last week.

Weymouth Seconds host Cattistock in County Division Two.

Portland Red Triangle first XI have a weekend off but their second team will be praying for good weather at Sturminster & Hinton in Division Four after two weeks without a contest.

Skipper Grant Neven has no worries about his side’s lack of time in the middle.

He added: “All the boys are up for it and can’t wait to play.

“Two weeks without a game is frustrating, but most of us have had some cricket so we shouldn’t be that rusty.

“We know we are in for a tough game, but we know that we are capable of beating anyone when we produce our best.”
