HUSBAND and wife karate couple Stephen and Pam Rawson saw three of their students achieve grading success at their club’s spring course, held at the Osprey Leisure Centre in Portland.

Youngsters Honey Deadman, Daniel Murphy and Max Hickman all achieved upper grades, much to the delight of the couple, who run Weymouth Shikukai Karate Club.

Under the tutelage of 8th Dan Sensei Fumio Sugasawa, Deadman earned her eighth kyu grade, with both Murphy and Hickman bagging their ninth.

Pam, a 6th Dan herself, told Echosport: “My husband and I have been teaching wado ryu karate for more than 35 years and when we moved to Weymouth we started another club here at the Weymouth swimming pool and fitness centre.”

Speaking about the performance of her young prodigies, she added: “It was a new experience for all of them, training alongside many black belts and higher grades, but they did themselves, and us, proud.

“In fact, the youngest, Daniel, performed a kata all on his own in front of the seniors.”

If any youngsters would like to get into karate, please contact Pam on 07976966152 or log on to the club’s website at shikukai.co.uk.
