GOLF: Robson wins county crown
5:00pm Sunday 1st June 2014 in Sport
TOM Robson became Weymouth Golf Club’s first ever county champion after securing a trophy treble at Broadstone.
Robson started his Dorset County Championship campaign by carding the lowest score in the strokeplay event to win the Garrett Salver and qualify comfortably for the matchplay stages.
Then, with John Welch and Robbie Mabb, Robson scooped the team event – the trio will now represent club and county at the English Champion Club competition later this year.
But it got better for Robson when he turned his attention to the individual matchplay.
He followed up his strokeplay success with a string of triumphs to give Weymouth Golf Club its very first county champion.
He defeated Mabb in an all-Weymouth semi and then pitted his wits against another club-mate, John Blanks, as the pair battled it out for the crown and Gold Medal.
The first two holes saw honours even but a slip by Blanks at the third gave Robson the chance to go one up, and from there he did not to look back, building a six-hole advantage by the 10th.
Blanks birdied the par-three 11th and was unlucky to hit a sprinkler head on his approach to the 12th.
He claimed the next two holes but it wasn’t enough as Robson held his nerve to wrap up the match on the 15th.
