TERRAS: Matthews swoops for Sills and Wannell
WEYMOUTH have announced the double-signing of experienced marksman Tim Sills and former Magpies’ loanee Jacob Wannell.
The duo come into the Terras’ squad to bolster both attacking and defensive options, and manager Jason Matthews has expressed his excitement with the two new additions.
Speaking about the capture of prolific frontman Sills on a one-year contract, the Weymouth manager told Echosport: “He got promoted with Torquay, Aldershot, and went to Wembley with Gosport last year, so I’m hoping he will bring some of his experience and strong track record to the Terras.
“I’m obviously delighted to have made the signing, Tim showed his desire when I went and met him, he is keen to do well and is hungry for success.
“He gives me a target man and gives me another option to go up alongside Stewart Yetton and Mark Ford.
“Stewart was outstanding last season and I was keen to get him some help, the way Tim holds the ball up and brings people into play takes some of the burden off of Stewart and hopefully they can form a formidable partnership.”
34-year-old Sills has featured for the likes of Hereford United and Oxford United in the Football League.
The striker has also appeared at Wembley on three separate occasions, including finding the net to help Torquay United gain promotion back to the Football League in 2009.
Also commenting on former Exeter City defender Wannell, who has had loan spells with both Dorchester and Poole Town, he added: “I’m delighted to capture Jacob as well, he comes in on a one-year non-contract, and it gives him a chance to put himself in the shop window.
“He has been a pro for two seasons at Exeter and did his apprenticeship there so he comes with the right pedigree.
“Jacob ticks a lot of boxes for me, I had earmarked three left-backs and we had positive talks.
“He is extremely good going forward, can fill in at centre-half and has a lovely left foot on him. It was position that needed to be addressed and we are delighted to get him on board.”
As his new-look squad continues to take shape, the Terras’ manager added: “I feel that we are making strides, there is competition for places now and I’m delighted to capture both of these lads because they were two positions that we were lacking in.”
