WIMBORNE & COLEHILL 273-8 (19pts) beat WEYMOUTH 150-8 (6pts) by 123 runs

WEYMOUTH felt the full force of the home side’s batsmen on a day when very little went right for the Seasiders.

The visitors were made to work hard in the field as the sun blazed down at The Leaze, with the hosts making 273-8 in their 50 overs.

Chasing that score down was always going to be a massive task for Weymouth and so it proved.

Other than a half-century for the returning Simon Browne, the visitors never troubled Wimborne & Colehill’s sizeable total.

For stand-in skipper Matt Lawes, it was an afternoon he would rather forget in a hurry.

“Nothing really went right,” he said. “We started off on the wrong foot and never got in the game, they batted well and credit to them.

“Some of their batsmen made big scores and we got worn down on a pretty good pitch.

“We struggled with our line and length and it was a very long 50 overs in the field on a warm day.

“And when the side you’re playing put together a decent partnership it can be hard to keep spirits up.”

He went on to add: “We never looked dangerous with the ball, though on a big ground the lads did well in the field.

“Simon got a good 50 when we batted but no-one else really scored any runs.

“We never looked like getting anywhere near their total and it was one of those games where we had practically lost after the first 10 overs.

“But we’ve got Parley next and we have something to prove against them.

“We went there on the first day of the season and we were poor, so when they come to us we have got to show that we can play cricket.”
