TWO students were recognised for their growing list of achievements in watersports at the Wey Valley School Sports presentation evening.

Scotty Stallman and Alexandra Stevenson had a successful evening, the former winning the windsurfing award and the latter taking the sailing trophy.

Stallman, a very keen windsurfer, is a familiar sight in Portland Harbour where he hones his skills.

He has taken part in several competitions as part of the Wills Warriors team and was part of the Wey Valley windsurfing team that won the Dorset Schools Trophy in 2013 and recently took an impressive 23 bullets at the Masterblaster Windsurfing event.

After receiving the award, he said: “I am really pleased, it will encourage me to aim higher, work harder and achieve more.”

Year 8 student Stallman started windsurfing three years ago through funding provided by the Will Mackaness Trust.

He was trained and coached initially by the Official Test Centre at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

Stevenson, 14, also started participating in watersports through the trust and won the windsurfing award last year.

She said: “I am delighted to have won the award. It feels great to be recognised and I am aiming for another successful sailing season.”

Stevenson was part of the Wey Valley sailing team which competed in the Dorset Schools Sailing Regatta last year.

This year she took part in the Royal Yachting Association Youth Nationals in April and managed a respectable 42nd position in the Laser Radial Silver Fleet.

This was followed recently by winning a Castle Cove Sailing Club race series in her Laser Kiwi.

Both students agreed it was a great evening which had inspired them for the future.
