FIVE GO FISHING in DORSET

ANGLERS enjoyed cracking weather for the ‘Five Go Fishing in Dorset’ two-day charter boat competition, held in Lyme Regis.

The target for each angler was the best aggregate score of five species – cod, bass, plaice, pollack and bream.

Despite the weather, fishing was not easy but the reef did produce some good-sized cod on both days; all caught aboard ‘Amar-etto IV’ skippered by Steve Sweet.

The best two cod, weighing 18.8lb and 16.5lb, came on a single drift caught by Mike Rogers and Phil Marshall respectively.

The wrecks produced the bass and the plaice but only small pollack were landed and the bream were hard to find as they haven’t arrived in great numbers yet.

However, Gary Wyld managed to winkle one out while fishing from the Alice Rose, skippered by Lewis Hodder.

The top five anglers after two days of fishing were: Phil Marshall (bass, cod and pollack for 164.60 per cent); Mike Hansell (bass, plaice and pollack for 119.91 per cent); Mike Rogers (cod and pollack for 110.50 per cent); Les Lawrence (cod and pollack for 75.50 per cent) and Tony Bess-ford (bass and plaice for 70.87 per cent).

Top skippers were Steve Sweet with 241.41 per cent; Lewis Hodder (159.41 per cent) and Phil Hodder (16.61 per cent).

The best fish awards were won by Mike Hansell for a bass of 68.55 per cent and a plaice of 44.39 per cent, Gary Wyld for his bream (51.48 per cent) and Mike Rogers (cod of 94.19 per cent).

This 18.8lb fish also set a new Lyme Regis SAC club record.

WEYMOUTH AS

MEMBERS of Weymouth AS signed on at Cogden to fish their latest shore match.

With a medium swell running and colour in the water it was not easy for Ray Barnes to land his thick-lip mullet of 2.04kg.

Some summer species made a showing at last including golden grey mullet and scad. Dogfish, small-eyed ray and smoothound also made an app-earance with Pete Hegg taking top weight with his bag of four smoothound for 3.91kg.

Barnes was second on weight with 3.71kg with Phil Cheeseman third with 1.85kg.

Keith Diplock and Gerald Bar-nes was fourth and fifth with 1.53kg and 1.49kg respectively.

OPEN BOAT FESTIVAL

FIFTEEN anglers signed on to fish the match in what promised to be good conditions.

The match was fished to limited species for the first time with only quality edible fish counting at the weigh-in.

The fishing was very poor which was surprising as some quality fish had been landed during previous club competitions.

The winner was Graham Stephenson with a nice mackerel and a red gurnard, second was Ash Legg with a plaice and third was James Barr with a pollack.

Most species was won by Stephenson with three species.

He also took the round fish pool which brought his total winnings to £150 with Ash Legg taking the flat fish pool.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

ASHLEY Storton landed a 6lb 1oz plaice while drift fishing aboard Flamer IV.

He used 8lb class tackle with a vibro spoon and wishbone trace baited with ragworm, black lugworm and squid to tempt this fish which was returned alive.
