POOLE TOWN 251-9 (20pts) beat WEYMOUTH 94 (4pts) by 157 runs

WEYMOUTH captain Kieron Womble didn’t pull any punches when assessing his side’s 157-run defeat at Poole Park.

Womble held his own hand up and admitted making mistakes that contributed to Weymouth’s heavy defeat.

Having elected to bowl first after winning the toss, the visitors allowed Poole to rack up a total of 251-9 before they were bowled out for just 94.

The win for Poole saw them take over from the Seasiders at the top of the Premier One table, though Womble’s men stay second following Parley’s surprise loss at home to Wimborne & Colehill.

“It was a tough day all round,” said a dejected Womble afterwards. “I didn’t think I captained as well as I could have and the game just ran away from us.

“We decided to bowl first after winning the toss because we’ve been quite good at chasing in the last couple of matches.

“We bowled okay but there were a couple of fumbles in the field and a few things didn’t go our way.

“They racked up 251 and then we got hammered when we went out to bat.

“The run-rate was steadily increasing and once we lost a couple of wickets then it became very difficult to chase down that score.

“They are a very good side and have always been strong at home so we knew it was going to be tough, and, in the end, we just weren’t up to it.”

Reflecting on his own performance as skipper, he added: “I think I’m still learning the role.

“Maybe there were a few fielding placements I should have changed and a couple of bowling changes I should have made.”

Brewster Surridge (84) top-scored for Poole in their innings, while Harry Tucker, pictured right, took 4-41 and John Ryan 3-52 as Weymouth were made to work hard on a big outfield.

Only four visiting batsmen – Jim Ryall, Matt Lawes, Dean Janaway and Simon Browne – reached double figures in response.

Once the first wicket had fallen with the score on 20, it was all downhill for the seasiders.

The five Poole bowlers picked up at least one wicket each with Dameth Gunawardena taking 3-29.

Womble and his men won’t be dwelling on this setback for long.

They know they will have to lift themselves for the visit of Sta-lbridge to Redlands on Saturday.

“We will come back stronger next time and everyone is still happy with how the season has gone,” he said.
