TERRAS’ boss Jason Matthews would have no hesitation employing a three-pronged attack next season after it was so effective in his side’s pre-season friendly rout of Guernsey on Saturday.

Matthews started the match with a front three of skipper Stewart Yetton, new signing Tim Sills and Mark Ford, and the approach paid off as Weymouth thrashed their opponents 6-1 at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Sills, Ford, George Rigg, Jamie Laird, Shane Krac and Chris McPhee were all on target – Tom De La Mare scored for Guernsey – in a performance that had player-manager Matthews purring.

Speaking to Echosport about the attacking formation, he said: “We went with three up top and that’s something I’ve been looking at for a while.

“It’s a formation I like and one I used a couple of times last season, and I now feel that I’ve got the personnel to be able to play that way.

“I’ve got a scouting system in place now to look at how other teams play and, if we think going with three up front is the best way to beat them then we will.

“I want to play attacking football and that formation is something we’ll use throughout the summer to see how it works.”

Matthews was again impressed by the impact of trialist and former Terras’ favourite Chris McPhee, who scored again after netting in the 2-2 with the Royal Marines last Thursday.

And the Weymouth chief reiterated his desire to sign the midfielder, adding: “There is no doubting Chris’s quality.

“He is an excellent player and someone I’m looking to bring in if our finances allow me to.”

McPhee’s strike rounded off an easy win over the Channel Island outfit.

Ford opened the scoring in the 16th minute, nudging the ball home after Guernsey keeper Tom Creed had blocked Sam Poole’s header.

The lead was doubled 10 minutes later, this time Rigg fed Sills and he beat Creed from close range.

De La Mare halved the deficit on the half hour mark but order was restored less than 60 seconds into the second period when Rigg tapped in.

A Laird header made it 4-1, Krac’s 20-yarder added a fifth and McPhee volleyed in five minutes from time – Sills, Laird and Krac were all netting their first goals for Weymouth.

“The signs are very pleasing and there were some good performances from a few people,” said Matthews.”

The Terras now travel to Chard Town tomorrow (7.30pm) for their third pre-season outing.

Terras: Matthews, Wells, Copp, Colwell (Kelly 61), Laird, Poole (Palmer 61), McPhee, Rigg (Tennant 72), Yetton, Sills (Krac 53), Ford (Jevon 72)
