THE Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament has been shelved for the second year in succession – but organiser Rhose Lawes is determined not to see the same happen again in 2015.

Just like 12 months ago, a lack of entries was the reason for this summer’s event being cancelled, leaving Lawes deeply frustrated at another hugely disappointing set of circumstances.

The tournament had undergone a complete revamp in a bid to avoid a repeat of last year’s cancellation, with matches set to take place at two venues across consecutive weekends.

However, with no entrants for the singles and several pairs dropping out of the doubles, Lawes made the decision to pull the plug on the competition.

“It’s so sad,” she said. “I was hopeful of it going ahead this year because we had people helping with advertising and sponsorship, but my instincts were wrong.

“I’ve been organising the tournament for a while now and this year is definitely the worst that I can remember.

“It’s deflating and so disappointing because we had all the gear ready for the tournament and I didn’t want the same to happen as last year.”

Lawes has confirmed that she will try again next year, keeping the same two-venue, two-weekend structure.

But instead of holding the event after Wimbledon, she plans to stage it before with the possibility of a warm-up tournament as well to get people in the mood.

“I’m going to try again next year,” she added. “I want full commitment from people and I’m hoping to have it over two weekends where matches can be played from the morning to the evening on each day.

“It’s going to be after the French Open and before Wimbledon so people will have no excuses.

“It will hopefully be a different story next year.”

This summer’s tournament, sponsored by J Lawes Tennis, Thomas J William Hair Design and New Body Fitness, was originally scheduled to take place at Weymouth Tennis Club and Melcombe Regis Tennis Club.
