A WIN against league whipping boys Ferndown Wayfarers tomorrow (1pm) will all but secure a top-four spot for Weymouth going into the six-game play-offs in Premier One, but Kieron Womble insists his side will have to earn it.

Weymouth currently occupy second position in the league with a total of 155 points, seven behind leaders Poole but only 13 ahead of Swanage and Parley, who sit fourth and fifth respectively.

Wayfarers remain winless and sit rock-bottom of the Premier One pile with a staggering 69-point gap between them and seventh placed Wimborne & Colehill.

But Womble, who welcomes back Matt Lawes and Neil Walton into the fold for the game, is keen to make sure his side do a professional job against the lowly outfit.

He told Echosport: “We have two favourable fixtures now but we won’t be taking anything for granted. They will be playing for a lot of pride and there are plenty of points still on offer.

“Up there, the pitch is usually a little bit green and we haven’t batted that much this season because we have usually bowled first, so we just have to make sure we don’t come unstuck. I’m sure confidence is high and I’m sure we can still get out there and make runs.”

On securing a top-four spot, he said: “It would be great if we could do it. If we do it then we can go out there and then focus on winning the league.”

The skipper opened the batting last week for the Seasiders in Lawes’ absence, and with his all-rounder returning, Womble has made the decision to stay at the top of the order tomorrow in an attempt to lead the charge.

He added: “I used to open and I’m in a nice bit of nick at the moment so I thought I would stay there and use it while I can.”

Meanwhile, Beaminster and Weymouth Seconds will battle out a bottom of the table clash at Redlands in County Division Two (1.30pm).

In the same league, Portland RT aim to close the gap on the top two when they take on Wimborne & Colehill Thirds at Reforne.

In County Division Three, Bridport will play their first fixture in two weeks when they host league leaders Sturminster Marshall.
