DAN Cann scored the first goals of his second spell with the Magpies in a pre-season triumph at Willand Rovers on Saturday.

Dan Smith gave Dorchester a first-half lead from the penalty spot, before Cann put the visitors 2-1 ahead after the hosts had levelled.

Striker Cann, who joined the Magpies from Poole Town earlier in the summer, grab- bed another in the second period and Jake Smeeton rounded things off with a well-struck fourth.

That took Dorchester’s tally to nine in two games following the 11-0 drubbing by Bournemouth, a result that manager Phil Simkin believes has now been put to bed.

As for Cann, Simkin was understandably pleased to see his man get off the mark in what were very testing conditions.

“The conditions were very difficult, it was so hot and humid,” he said. “Dan is a big lad and it wasn’t easy for him in conditions like that.

“But he did really well and opened his account for the club with a brace.

“The first was from a Dan Smith cross from the left that he side-footed in after losing his marker.

“The second was blasted in from about 20 yards after a one-two with Ben Joyce, who was outstanding with Dan Smith.”

Ryan Woodford played his first full 90 minutes for the Magpies after signing last week, and Simkin was impressed with the performance of young defender Oakley Hanger.

Nick Crittenden and Jamie Gleeson were both rested following knocks against Bridport, while the likes of Tony Rolls, Jason Brookes and Emmanuel Clement all got game time.

“Willand gave us a good game,” added Simkin. “I’m disappointed we conceded a goal but pleased we had a good workout again.

“Ryan Woodford was excellent and Oakley Hanger was outstanding at right-back, so, all in all, it was a pretty good day.”

Dorchester entertain Portland United tomorrow night (7.45pm).
