A WEYMOUTH pupil has competed at international level in taekwondo after receiving a grant from her school as part of a sports scholarship.

Libys McGuinness, who is in Year 11 at Wey Valley School, competed in the International Poomsae Championships in Ireland.

The scholarship grant helped the teenager with the cost of accommodation and entrance fees.

Libys said: “The competition was outstanding and in my division I proudly came eighth against others from Britain, Ghana, Gibraltar, Ireland and Scotland. Because of that I have been invited back to Ireland to fight in September this year.

“While in Ireland I also had the privilege of training with twice world champion grand master Shin, Master Derek Somner, which was an unforgettable experience.”

Phil Thomas, principal at Wey Valley School, said: “Libys has really made the most of her sports scholarship. She works hard at her sport, attending lunchtime and after-school martial art sessions with the lead tutor Rob MacDonald.

“As part of these sessions, Libys has coached some of our younger students.

“She is a great ambassador for the school and for the sports, and she was awarded the martial arts student of the year at the sports presentation evening.

“Libys is a credit to the school as she has not only engaged with sporting opportunities but also initiated charity work and sought to protect and encourage other young people. The confidence she has demonstrated in her sporting achievements is now reflected in all aspects of her life.”

Stuart Heath, PE teacher at Wey Valley, added: “Libys follows a number of students from the school who have received a sports scholarship grant.

“Many students go on to compete at regional, national and international level and we are pleased the school can support these opportunities for our students.

“In recent years, Abbie Jolliffe has competed nationally in badminton tournaments and Matthew Mildon, Rebecca Raybould and Alex Jolliffe in cycling, representing their country at various levels.”
