THE Yacht Clubs of Weymouth Keelboat Championships saw more than 45 boats competing in glorious sunshine and a variety of wind speeds.
Five fleets made up the event – Impala, IRC, PY 1, PY 2 and Squib – with seven races being completed throughout them all, apart from the Squibs who only managed six.
In the IRC fleet, Mark and Rima Bugler of Weymouth Sailing Club (WSC) won the class on Saskia VII, finishing ahead of Bengal Magic (WSC), helmed by James Chalmers, and Nathan Batchelor on VX One from Royal Northumberland Yacht Club.
The PY 1 fleet was won by Bob Turner of Castle Cove Sailing Club (CCSC) on Serco, with Bill Barker (CCSC) on Flair II in second and Tim Gallego (CCSC) on Surprise in third. The PY 1 fleet was the largest with 15 boats.
Paul Barford (WSC) on Sole Bay won every race to take the win in the PY 2 fleet. E Clabburn (CCSC) on Ella was second and David Henley (CCSC) on Tiptoe of Tara was third.
The 12-strong Squib fleet saw some very close racing.
Longshot, crewed by Jim and Ann Chalmers (WSC), were successful in winning the class.
Second place went to Simon and Jill Vines (WSC) on Quantum and Simon Unwin and Judith Thomas from the Royal Dart Yacht Club were third.
Local WSC cadet Sam Avant was able to helm Pepper (WSC) in the IRC fleet for two of the days.
He said: “It was a very exciting experience.
“When I signed up to do the regatta I never imagined I would be able to helm, and I would love to do it again.”
