WEYMOUTH 207-4 (18pts) beat WIMBORNE & COLEHILL 199-8 (9pts) by 8 runs

DAVID Trotter was the star of the show claiming five wickets as Weymouth confirmed their place in the top four of Premier One with a win over Wimborne & Colehill at Redlands.

With Weymouth posting a total of 207 off of their 48 overs, thanks to 67 from Jim Ryall and 46 from Dean Janaway earlier in the day, the Minstermen got off to a flyer in reply, smashing their way to 58-0 from the first eight overs of their innings.

But Trotter came into the attack and with the help of Simon Browne, who put the squeeze on at the other end with 0-17 from his 10 overs, the Seasiders’ seamer bowled exceptionally, returning 5-17 to swing the game back in Weymouth’s favour and set up a nervy finish.

The visitors needed 14 to win off the last over, but Harry Tucker held his nerve and took the wicket of Wimborne skipper James Miller late in the piece to secure an eight-run victory.

Seasiders’ skipper Kieron Womble told Echosport: “I’m absolutely delighted, we played so well and after the start they got off to, a lot of teams would have buckled and bottled it, but we kept going and, when Trotts and Browner came on, it really dried the runs up.

“It’s very rare that we have batted first this year but we batted really well to put a score on the board. When we came out to field it was a bit of a shellshock, I’m not sure what it was but to drag it back was phenomenal.”

With the victory, Weymouth are sitting pretty in second place of Group A in the Premier One standings, 10 points off the top spot with at least a fourth-placed finish secured at the end of the season.

Womble added: “Survival was initially the first target but now we are in the top four we can really enjoy the last six games, and if we can keep pushing for that title we will.

“There is no worries and no pressure now, when we went into this season we worried that we could have gone down but this was a really special victory, one of the best.”
