NEW BODY gym were on the ball as they claimed victory in the Battens charity tournament on Weymouth.

The fitness group beat Team Stratton 20-11 to lift the trophy after a sizzling evening of volleyball in the seventh annual extravaganza, organised by Battens Solicitors.

The winners made their way to the final after they triumphed over Agincare Demons, while Stratton narrowly defeated the Dorset Echo’s Echo Beach in the other semi-final.

Some 32 teams from a variety of companies and organisations battled it out on the sands with proceeds in aid of the Dorset Kidney Fund.

The popular tournament was held as the curtain-raiser to the annual RAF Careers Weymouth Classic, played over the week- end.

Cherise Luke-Bennett, one of the solicitors organising the competition in Battens’ Weymouth office, said: “Once again it was a superb evening.

“Congratulations to New Body, who were worthy winners, and thanks to everyone who joined in to make it such a success.

“The weather was perfect and there was a great turnout from supporters.

“We hope to have beaten last year’s fundraising total of over £1,000, with proceeds this year for the Dorset Kidney Fund.

“Many thanks also go to the RAF, Weymouth Volleyball Club, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and every- one else who provided supp- ort.”

Teams played in groups on beach courts before the grand final on the centre court.

Talented singers the Decadettes provided entertainment in the interval, there was also a hog roast from Piggin’ Perfect and a bar from Aura.

Paul Bithell, vice-chairman of the Dorset Kidney Fund, said: “It was a fantastic evening and our most appreciative thanks go to Battens as the proceeds will go a long way to help renal patients.”

The Plate final was won by Albert Goodman accountants when they edged out Mustoe Shorter 14-13.
