PORTLAND RED TRIANGLE 147 (5pts) lost to BEAMINSTER 151-6 (20pts) by 4 wickets

BEAMINSTER won for only the third time this season on Saturday to boost their chances of avoiding relegation to Division Three.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Beaminster’s opening bowlers immediately exerted pressure on the visitors and three early wickets were taken by Aidey Phiilips (2-49) and the economical Ross Baker (2-19) to leave Portland on 24-3.

Backed up by sharp and enthusiastic fielding, the hosts seized control of the game as wickets continued to fall regularly with Jack Walklet (3-38), Mark Barber (1-15), Terry Field (1-5) and Dave Persy (1-0) all chipping in.

A low Portland total looked inevitable until the islanders’ middle order showed a bit of resistance to ensure something of a respectable score was posted.

The Beaminster reply came to life after both openers were dismissed cheaply with the score on 15.

Richard Runyard (36) and Baker (47) compiled a thrilling partnership of 68 in only 48 balls.

Baker dominated the bowlers by smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, hitting 11 boundaries before being caught attempting a maximum.

The good work was continued by Will Everitt who hit a brisk 23, but three quick wickets fell and Beaminster’s insecurities with the bat resurfaced with the score on 126-6.

However, the experienced duo of Hugh Rathbone (21no) and Phillips (5no) played watchfully to guide the home side towards a valuable victory as they reached their target in the 31st over.

This was a huge win for the team with good contributions from the frontline bowlers and batters.

It was evident that confidence had been gained from the previous week’s victory against Wimborne and that the players are determined to remain in Division Two next season.

After losing so many home games to the weather, it was great for Beaminster to play at the Memorial Ground and deliver a good performance for the spectators.
