WILLIAM Fox-Pitt came agonisingly close to capturing individual eventing gold at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy.

Riding Chilli Morning, Sturminster Newton’s Fox-Pitt had to settle for bronze after knocking down the second show jumping fence.

German duo Sandra Auffarth and Michael Jung finished first and second respectively having put all the pressure on Fox-Pitt with clear rounds.

In the team competition, Fox-Pitt, Tina Cook, Zara Phillips and Harry Meade won silver for 2010 champions Great Britain.

Germany held on to the advantage they had built up in the cross-country to win gold with some excellent jumping at the D’ornano Stadium in Caen.

Fox-Pitt, individual silver medallist on Cool Mountain four years ago, was second following the dressage but led after the cross-country.

In the end, Chilli Morning clipped fence number two and Fox-Pitt’s quest for a first individual major championship was over.
