GOSPORT 2 WEYMOUTH 5

WEYMOUTH bagged their first points of the season with an emphatic win away at now bottom of the league Gosport.

With the score at 2-2 at half-time, the Seasiders dominated in the second half and finally produced a display of discipline and control that had been lacking in their previous two games.

A change in line-up saw Matthew Lawes move from left-back to midfield where he was replaced by forward Matthew Metcalfe who produced a man of the match performance.

Weymouth started well and made several early chances, however, Gosport were first to score when, after their first attack, their skipper was allowed to break into the shooting circle and get his shot off past stranded Weymouth keeper David Civil.

The Seasiders responded imm-ediately through a third goal in as many games from Christopher Fry. The visitors pushed on and soon took a 2-1 lead.

Patrick May pounced on a rebound and showed a level head to slot the ball into the side-netting with a neat flick from five metres out.

Weymouth continued to dominate and were frustrated when Gosport scored with only their second attempt of the game.

The Seasiders continued well from the restart. Much of the action in the early stages was in the Gosport half but Weymouth took some time to get their breakthrough and retake the lead.

Eventually, a penalty corner was won and Metcalfe returned the ball from the top of the circle to captain Simon Harvey at the point of injection.

Harvey deflected the ball across the face of the goal to Fry and he was on hand to scramble it over the line.

Gosport’s resistance was finally broken after the visitors’ fourth goal was scored by midfield playmaker, Steven Membury, assisted by May attacking down the right.

For the remaining 15 minutes, Gosport offered very little in attack and appeared to lack any fight at all, not helped by Weymouth’s continued energy and composure in possession.

The fifth goal came as a result of sustained pressure. Lawes intercepted a Weymouth clearance and got his shot off from the top of the circle to make the scoreline 5-2.
