ASHLEY Wells has voiced his annoyance over his looming three-match ban, but is determined to do all he can for the Terras when they face Chippenham Town today.

The full-back, who has nailed down a place in the Terras’ starting XI this season, will play his final game this afternoon (3pm) before serving the suspension for the red card he picked up against Paulton Rovers.

Wells was given an early bath by referee Ron Ganfield after he lunged in on Mitchell Page just short of the break against Rovers, who went on to end Weymouth’s unbeaten home record with a 4-2 win that night.

Commenting on his sending off, the former Portland United man told Echosport: “It was disappointing but that’s the consequences.

“I don’t know why I did it, it was just a rush of blood and that was it.

“I have looked back at it and I think it was fair that the ref sent me off but I still think their player got away with it a bit.

“He was a big lad so I went in to look after myself and it looked a lot worse than it was.

“The worst thing about it is leaving the rest of your team-mates out there trying to put back together what you have done. It’s not something you want to do to your friends.

“I am just trying to do as much as I can while I can for the team.”

And while Wells will be frustrated viewing his team-mates from the sidelines, he believes they have the strength in depth to cope without him. “It’s always awful watching because you can’t do anything about it,” he added.

“You just have to hope the lads do it, but the quality we have in the dressing room and the squad that Jason (Matthews) has put together is more than capable of replacing me with someone just as strong.”

Fellow full-back Jamie West, who is set to play 90 minutes for the reserve squad today, is likely to feature in Wells’ absence.

And while Matthews’ regular right-back is keen to reclaim his starting place on his return, he is backing the former AFC Bournemouth youngster to slot in.

“He is a good player. He was at Bournemouth and is a good young lad,” Wells added. “Last year I was injured quite a bit so he would have got his chance, whereas this year I have played well consistently so it’s been hard for Jason, who believes if you play well you keep your place, to try and change it when we are doing so well.

“I am more than confident he can come in and do a job, he played atBraintree and that was a hard game for his first game in and he did well, so hopefully the boys do it.”
