JASON Matthews believes he saw glimpses of the blistering form the Terras showed at the start of the season during the final 30 minutes of their triumph over Cirencester Town on Saturday.

A fluent late flourish saw Weymouth seal a much-needed three points at the Bob Lucas Stadium and gain ground on league leaders Poole Town, who came from two goals down to grab a point at fellow promotion hopefuls Truro.

And while he admitted the first hour of the clash with the Centurions was fairly dogged, the Terras’ player-manager was keen to reflect on their grandstand finish.

“We had a big chat and a meeting before the game about where we have been going wrong in the last few weeks,” he said.

“The first half wasn’t pretty but it was all about staying in the game, we did that, and that was the important thing.

“For me that was key, Cirencester huffed and puffed and had good possession in the first half, but other than the first few minutes in the second, we started to play with a little bit of confidence.

“People that have not been showing for the ball over the last few weeks started showing for it and people were coming back and having the ball off me.

“I felt that the last half an hour we put on a bit of a show and it was a bit more like the Weymouth that started the season.”

Matthews was also chuffed with rewarding the fans, who had to endure a tough defeat at the hands of Corby Town last Wednesday.

He added: “Those fans have been outstanding all season and it was nice to give them something to cheer about, not just with the goals, but to put on a show in the last half hour.

"That’s what I will keep trying to do as Weymouth manager. I will keep giving it my all and I the day that I don’t think that I can bring any more to the table will be the day that I will walk away from it.”
