CUP hero Alec Fiddes believes Weymouth’s extra-time victory over Poole Town on Tuesday night will spur the squad on in their quest for promotion.

The young winger hit a sweet strike to see off the Dolphins and book the Terras’ place in this season’s Dorset Senior Cup final against arch-rivals Dorchester Town.

He told Echosport: “To us it meant a lot because we haven’t been playing as well as we can recently and a lot of people started to doubt us.

“But we shut quite a lot of people up and it will send a message out to the rest of the league.

“I think we can build from it and properly go for it again now.

“It was a big psychological victory against Poole because they still have to come back to our place in the league and that was pretty much their full strength team out. Hopefully we can do the same again.

“I felt after the game in the dressing room we believed we were back to doing what we do best.”

The former Weston-super-Mare man also expressed his delight in notching the winner.

He added: “I think everyone was tired then. I beat the Poole defender to the ball and thought I might as well hit it. I thought the keeper wouldn’t be ready for it, and he got a hand to it but luckily it went in. I was so happy.

"I have really enjoyed my time with the club so far and hopefully I can get a few more towards the end of the season to help us get promoted.

“It has been a bit frustrating for me over the last few weeks because the team hasn’t been doing that well. I have been on the bench and haven’t been able to help that much.

“I feel I am ready now to help the team as much as possible and hopefully we can push on."
