ALTHOUGH his side’s quest for a play-off place took a monumental blow, proud Weymouth player-manager Jason Matthews could not fault his side’s performance against Corby Town.

A Greg Mills strike inside the final 10 minutes at the Bob Lucas Stadium sealed the contest for the title-chasing Steelmen, meaning Weymouth’s destiny is now out of their own hands.

Reflecting on Saturday’s display, Matthews told Echosport: “I think we put in a superb performance “I know that’s hard to say when we have lost the game but credit to the boys.

“One great finish has won the game and you pay your money for players to finish, unfortunately for us Greg Mills has come up with a great strike.

“We had two or three chances. With the strong wind I took a long goal kick and it just wouldn’t come down for Yetts (Stewart Yetton) and he cleared the bar. On another day Yetts would score and I’ll bank on him scoring tomorrow.

“It’s incredibly frustrating because the boys were outstanding and, for me, it’s the two draws in the two previous home games against Dunstable and Burnham that has cost us so dearly.”

But while his side still have a chance of making the top-five, the Weymouth player-manager is determined not to give up the ghost.

“I tried to lift the boys after,” he added.

“They were all disappointed but it’s not dead until it’s dead, if we win against Poole we go into the last game of the season level on points for the play-offs and then anything can happen.

“We have got to give it everything we have and if we give a performance like we did against Corby in the next two games, it would be unbelievable.”

Matthews was also asked whether Weymouth favourite Trevor Challis would remain as part of his staff next season during the club’s fans’ forum.

He added: “Trev is the manager of Bristol City under-16s and was my first choice when I came to the club to be my number two.

“I have spoken to Trev about what it would take to bring him to the club and we are still at a negotiation period.

“It’s not dead in the water but it’s not a definite yes at the moment.”
