BRITISH Army private Nichole Brookman is set to turn her attention to coaching after being part of a winning team at an inter-squadron boxing finals night in Gutersloh, Germany.

The 22-year-old from Weymouth lost her welterweight bout to Tara Marston but left the ring to resounding cheers following a contest full of determination.

Brookman, a member of 2 Close Support (CS) Squadron, who won six of 11 fights during the 1 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Inter-Squadron Finals, has served in Germany for four years.

And although she was narrowly beaten on the night after a spirited and whole-hearted display, Brookman was not disappointed and still intends to continue with boxing.

She said: “I am looking to start my boxing coaching course after these finals and once qualified I will be able to train others in the regiment to take part in next year’s inter-squadron competition.

“Boxing is a fantastic sport, great for your fitness I would recommend it to anyone to try. “Being a female boxer you have to gain respect first but once you have you are really accepted into the team and not treated any differently, in fact sometimes they under-estimate you until they see what you can do and the drive and determination to succeed.”

The referee of Brookman’s fight was so impressed with both boxers’ honest and determined approach that he singled them out for praise when announcing the judges’ decision.

The night concluded with Lt Col Stevenson, Commanding Officer 1 Regiment RLC, commending all the boxers for the huge amount of mental and physical courage needed to enter the ring.

“From my perspective that just commands respect,” he said.

“You have all shown skill, determination and demonstrated great discipline and focused aggression – all the things that make the British soldier so special.”

Weymouth Boxing Club’s plans for a new gym and sports hall have been submitted to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

Anyone interested in helping the club with their fundraising drive can ‘Buy-a-Brick’ for £2, while £500 will give companies a plaque in the entrance hall. Ring Dave Nelmes on 07899925316.
